About the Creative Process.
Art the Hard Way was created because life can be hard—and creativity can help us make something meaningful from what we have lived through.
My years as an artist, educator, and prison chaplain shaped this work long before generative AI became part of my process. Today, AI is one of the tools I use to explore ideas, develop illustrations, refine language, and bring projects to life. I believe in being honest about that collaboration.
But AI does not determine why these products exist or who they are meant to serve. The purpose, direction, and final decisions remain mine. I revise each project until it feels useful, responsible, and human.
There is a joke: “Don’t make art with AI—just channel your childhood trauma like the rest of the artists.” Like many artists, I had already been doing that for years—and still do. A new tool does not erase the experiences that formed my voice.
Art the Hard Way is about turning limitation into possibility, pain into purpose, and lived experience into something that may help another person. I respect the concerns surrounding generative AI and remain accountable for everything released under this name.
The technology assists the process.
The purpose remains deeply human.
